Meditation improves the well-being of adults with cognitive impairment

Meditation is a safe and effective treatment for patients with mild cognitive impairment. This is confirmed by research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease (1) that has shown that a high level of chronic stress negatively affects the hippocampus, the part of the brain involved in memory and learning. Therefore, reducing that stress can improve the well-being of these patients. And much better if done naturally, without resorting to drugs.

The practice of meditation has been postulated as one of the most effective tools to achieve it, as this study shows. It had 14 men and women between 55 and 90 who had mild cognitive impairment. For 8 weeks half of the patients attended a workshop to understand the mechanisms of conscious meditation, with sessions of at least 20 minutes.
After that time, those patients who had completed the program significantly improved their cognition, being able to observe positive results directly in the regions of the brain involved in the deterioration. Also, this improvement contributed to greater well-being.
